Description

Steeped in history and charged with suspense, "Crazy Nights" is an epic novel set over a hundred years ago, but the themes sound more than current.

When in 1901 on the island Minger a plague epidemic breaks out, the locals, Muslims and Christians, start blaming each other. But whether pilgrims from Mecca or merchants from Alexandria brought the disease, chaos ensues on the picturesque, beautiful and peaceful island. After Sultan Abdul Hamid II and the Great Powers eventually order their warships to blockade the island to prevent the spread of the plague, the inhabitants of Minger are left to cope on their own. Opportunists, naifs, and adventurers take advantage of the population's desperation and paralyzing, omnipresent fear.

The new book of Orhan Pamuk is a unique requiem for the Ottoman Empire, convulsed by its natural decline, by national liberation struggles, by backwardness and superstition, by the conflict between tradition and progress. It is also an extraordinary historical novel that skillfully interweaves fantasy and reality, past and present, principles and fears of East and West.
