Afonso Brandao grew up in a humble family and after three years in the seminary joined the Portuguese army. During the First World War he was promoted to the rank of captain and sent to lead the brigade from Minho in Flanders. After two months of fighting in the trenches, Afonso went to Baron Redier's estate in Armantier to take his leave. There he meets the baron's beautiful young wife, the Frenchwoman Agnes, and can't take his eyes off her. Soon the two are embroiled in a passionate affair, tested not only by the wrath of her betrayed husband but also by the cruel and inexorable course of the war. For it disregards feelings, hopes and dreams and causes only separation, loss and suffering.

The German High Command secretly prepares a devastating attack to break through the Allied defensive line in a small section of the Lys River Valley. That is where the Portuguese troops are positioned. Afonso and his soldiers will fight to their last breath, but will victory bring him any closer to his dreamed-of meeting with his French lover, or will it already be too late?
