Description
Quebec, Canada, 1950s: Relations between the French and the English run like a razor's edge - just as with the parents of Maggie Hughes. Maggie's English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that do not include marriage to the poor French boy from the next farm. But Maggie's heart belongs to Gabriel Phoenix. When she became pregnant at fifteen, her parents forced her to give her baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life „on track.“.
Elodie grows up in orphanages - an already miserable existence that takes a tragic turn. Along with thousands of other orphans, she was declared mentally ill as a result of a new law that provided more funding to mental hospitals than to orphanages. Smart and tenacious, Elodie survived the cruel abuse of the nuns and finally gained her freedom at seventeen.
Maggie, married to a businessman eager to have children, can not forget the daughter she was forced to abandon. A chance new encounter with Gabriel presents her with a difficult choice. As time passes, Maggie and Elodie's life paths often intertwine, but the two never meet until Maggie realizes she shouldn't wait, but search for her long lost daughter.
