Stefan is highly educated and enterprising, he takes an active part in the progress of the capital, and his heart, which has hitherto remained indifferent to temptation, finds itself irresistibly drawn to the innocent peasant girl, who not only stands out from the city's vanity, but also captivates him with her willful mountain pride.

Many obstacles stand in the way of the young. Bojana's father, angry at God for taking his beloved away early, is deeply rooted in the past, the established ways and the village life, and looks with dislike at the new times saturated with changes. And it is good to have his mother Elena, the guardian of the family hearth and of faith, who with a sensitive heart and life wisdom is not only like a mother to Bojana, but is also her steadfast support in her quest to find happiness.
